story telling attempt no.2

toffee. sticky sweet toffee.

3pm and they were at a mutual friend's place for a dance rehersal. working on dance moves and teaching one another. everyone was working hard as the performance was about 2 weeks away.

5pm and they took a break. she flopped down on the comfy couch. fun as it was, it was also exhausting as they had had a long day. her girlfriends began messing around with the piano, his guyfriends hung around talking about basketball and he sat down beside her. she snuggled into his arms and felt really protected, loved... she wished they could stay like that for eternity. she breathed in his scent... committing it to memory.

someone had brought a bag of sweets and they were passing it around. she picked a toffee outta the bag and unwrapped the brownish-gold wrapping paper. it was a hot day and the toffee had melted slightly. sticky. she popped the toffee into her mouth... not noticing that a bit had fallen unto the collar of her white baby-tee. but he had. he got some tissues and tried to help her remove the toffee but it was no use. she got up and hurried to the kitchen sink as the tee was her favourite and she didn't want it to be stained. she tried washing but it was quite impossible for her to wash it off since she could hardly see her collar. he had followed her into the kitchen and he helped her rid the toffee stain.

***

some noise brought her back to reality. it was a distant memory now but she still remembers it like it was yesterday. everyone who saw them together then said that they were a match made in heaven. "what a laugh" she thought, "they should look at us now. both living different lives". their paths separated a long time ago and she has hardly seen him nor heard from him. she had heard from some friends that he was now in a serious relationship with another girl and they looked great together. she was happy for him but she still missed him. she had dated other guys after him but she did not let them in the way she had him. he was her mr right.

still sucking on the toffee in her mouth, she continued her reading in the library. she did not see him come in and sit down beside her. "excuse me, i think u've got a little something on your collar" he said. she smelt a familiar scent... looked up and he smiled at her whilst offering tissues. "silly little girl, until now and you still can't have toffee without having a little of it fall onto your shirt?" he said whilst helping her get rid of the toffee just like he did a long time ago. "i heard you were back in town and i knew you would be here... i wanted to give you this" he said as he handed to her a card... "my wedding invitation. i hope you would attend. it would mean the world to me."

perhaps we give all of our hearts unconditionally to those who hardly feel the same way in return and that's when we get hurt. we build up walls to hide our hearts to save us from the pain. and that's when we, in turn, hurt the people who gave their hearts to us unconditionally. and the cycle goes on and on...

storytelling attempt no.1

9am and she's awake. as she lay in bed, she thought "it's boy's birthday in a couple of days' time but i'm not going to be around to celebrate it with him. i'm going back tomoro... perhaps i could throw him a surprise birthday party tonight." she smiled as she made her plans. rolling over on her side, she watched as he slept peacefully beside her.

11am and she got up. went to shower and began her plans. he was still fast asleep. she msged his flatmate telling him of her plans and asking him for help. they decided on him asking boy to go up to uni for a game of football but when they looked out of the window, decided to change their plans to a game of badminton instead. it had been raining for the past few days and it was still raining.

2pm and he was getting ready to go up to uni for badminton. it was pouring and she prepared the sole umbrella for him. he needed it more since he was going to be going away on a trip for awhile and should not be catching a cold. as he was about to leave, she asked if he would leave the keys for her so that if the rain stopped she could go out.

4pm and it was still raining. she decided not to wait any longer and she hurried out into the wet and cold dressed in jeans and a hooded jacket. she had not been out in the town on her own before and she was worried that she might not be able to find her destination. and she was right. she ventured up and down the lanes, in and out of alleys... before stumbling upon her destination out of the blue. running into the shop to get out of the rain, she got a look from the shop owner that seemed to say, "stay out". but she didn't care. she headed straight in and she picked out the present and handed it straight to the owner. he looked at her, dripping wet, and told her the price. she said she knows and asked if there was a box that she could put it in. he packed the present up for her with a shocked look on his face but nevertheless gave her a discount when he found out what she was doing.

5pm and she dashed out of the shop and back into the rain. she somewhat figured out her second destination while getting lost in town a second time. unfortunately the shop did not have what she wanted and she wandered around town figuring what she should get instead. when she decided, she hurried into the shop and bought the cake and then she made a mad dash back home as she knew he would be coming back any moment soon. when she got home, she hid the cake and the present in her luggage and changed out of her wet clothes and blow-dried her hair with his hair dryer.

6pm and he arrives home. he asked her if she went out at all and she told him no. he then went to shower and she moved the cake and the present to his flatmate's room. and so the plan was in force. luckily for her, one of his friends had some friends over and so she decided to bring them up to introduce them to everyone after dinner. giving everyone else a perfect excuse to be hanging around the flat.

11pm and she has made several attempts at lighting the lighter to light the candles. no use. the lighter did not work. the flatmates joined in her search for a working lighter and eventually they found one. she lighted the candles and made her way into the kitchen where he was playing bridge with his friends. one of the flatmates flicked the light switch off while the rest began to sing the traditional birthday song. boy was sitting with his back towards the kitchen door and did not turn around to see what was happening. when she placed the cake right smack in front of him, there was a look of shock on his face. when his friends reprimanded him on not turning around, he reasoned that he thought it was one of the other guy's birthday. which was somewhat a good excuse as it was after all a few days before his birthday.

a few days later and he calls her from his trip. his flatmate had just given him the present she got for him. he asked her why she got it and she asked him wasn't it what you've been wanting for so long now? she had saved her money in order to be able to afford the present but that was all that she told him. she did not tell him about her little adventure in the rain and that she was now sick. and until the day when they parted paths, he never knew how and when she got the present and the cake.

i can't sleep
an image haunts me...

today at work, an elderly couple stopped by my stall. they were talking and pointing at several of the jewelry on display. she was in a wheelchair and he was beside her. when i went over to see if they needed any help, she said that she was looking for a bracelet with green stones in them. the reason being that today was their emerald wedding anniversary. i found one really lovely bracelet and she tried it on. she looked at him for his approval and he took out £20 to pay for it immediately. she smiled and said thank you and together they left the stall. him pushing her on the wheelchair.

55 years of marriage and i could still feel the love between the two of them. and it felt like a slap in the face. you see, i no longer believe in "happy ever after" endings. all those fairy tales we heard when we were a child mean nothing to me now. they are just lies. there's no such thing as "happy ever after". i stopped believing in it a long time ago. but today, the elderly couple... the image of the two of them leaving my stall... 55 years of marriage and god knows how many years before that of being in love with one another... just made my heart ache. it made me question if there really is a "happy ever after" ending for everyone. and if there is, where's mine? 55 years of marriage! imagine how old they are now... and yet, they still have one another. and so, more questions pop up... will i live to be that old? will i be like them, celebrating my emerald wedding anniversary with my soulmate? will we still be so much in love as they were?

so now their image lingers on inside my head... the questions float by over and over and over and i can hardly sleep. but the main one is...

is there really a "happy ever after"?

but to the elderly couple who stopped by today...
may you have many more years filled with love.

Two souls with but a single thought,
Two hearts that beat as one.
- Friedrich Halm

it's been almost a week since i blogged. been working for 4 days in a row. terribly exhausted. 2 days at metrocentre... and 2 days in washington galleries. a grand total of almost 36 hours of work in 4 days!

i like washington galleries better than metrocentre. it's not as busy as metrocentre and the takings aren't as much... but it is nicer there. besides, the hours are shorter... at metrocentre i work maximum 11 hours a day whereas at washington galleries, maximum hours would be 8 and a half hours a day.

w.g. is nicer too cos i don't really have to worry about itchy fingers... the people there are either too young or too old to actually steal! just the other day at metrocentre, i lost an £8 earrings to itchy fingers. a group of geordie kids came by and not to be discriminative or anything but it's the truth, these kids just can't be trusted. they mess around and i don't have eyes around the whole stall. sheesh... and i have to pay for it... oh well, thank god it's just earrings and not the necklaces that got stolen... otherwise i'll die.

another reason why i like w.g. is becos... the cashpoint is just soo near the stall... no excuse for anyone to say "i don't have any cash on me". *grins* besides, me stall just beside sainsbury and near the entrance, need i say more?

anyways, just sooo tired... i need a goood rest. me aim tomoro, clean my room... go to town for some jogging pants, black working pants, comfortable black shoes... then mebbe gonna go over to jesmond and go jogging. my mum laughed when she heard me say i wanna go jogging. i hope no one else is laughing now... [>.<] oh come on, support me in my attempts to diet and be healthy! my aim, slim down and gain stamina before convocation! sleeepy time... zzzZZZzzz....

the familiar sound of heartbreak echoes all around
the familiar feeling of pain so surreal
when did those protective walls fall down?
now all that is left are ruins on the ground

let it rain
may the raindrops wash away the dirt
let it storm
may the thunder cover the cry of hurt

i don't know if i should be happy or i should be sad... a part of me is screaming in joy for the fact that i've gotten thru the whole course. i've "almost" completed this path of my life which i doubted i would perform well in. "almost" because today was the due date of one of the last two assessments i had and results have yet to be released. i'm happy becos soon, i'll be going home home home! and i get to see my dearest summer and spring. oh how i miss u guys so much!!! and omg... i wanna nasi lemak and milo sangat kurang ais!!! but err, minus the 'norman' part k. oooh! and i miss my darrling purple room and my bearbear who was waiting for me on my bed...

...who has taken to dragging poor bearbear who's bigger than him around the house! pooor bearbear!

but then again, another part of me is sad that it is the end. learned so much and grew so much from the experience... made new acquaintances and we supported one another thruout this intense course. and now we're parting ways... to different parts of malaysia. going back to the way things were before this course... sort of. in fact, a dear fren has already left us in newcastle... as i'm typing this, she's most probbly in london where she leaves for brunei on wednesday...

dear eme
i'm glad to have known you. although we may not have been close, but we sure did have some fun times together eh? thanks for being u... supportive and so full of advise. take good care of urself... and keep in touch yeah? me wanna know when u gonna be called a mummy! man... if my mum was as hot as u... my slippers has gone into retirement edi. 9 june 2005.

was on a mission to accomplish lotsa stuff that day. and my dear 2 year old, cost less than a pound slippers, had to choose to retire. had to collect money from the finance office in uni, had to hand in the professional ethics file, had to reclaim my solicitors' negligence opinion which i handed in 2 months ago, had to print my family plan out, had to go to the bank... and whaddaya know? on my way to uni, my slipper broke. well, i dunno how to describe it best...

so had to drag my feet all the way to the finance office first since i was nearest to it... looking like some pathetic woman who has a broken ankle or something cos it was also on the way to the doctors. an elderly lady passed by and she stopped to ask if i was alright. well, bless her heart. anyways, after completing my first mission, i had to drag my feet all the way to sutherland building where majority of people where there. thank god!

prologue
winter feels overdressed as she boards the metro at 3pm towards the city centre. the weather was purrrfect. winter heads to drill hall where she rushes in to print her opinion and then to northumberland building where she has her pro.neg. class with a.h. at 3.30pm. and winter WAS the overdressed student in class! apparently, everyone else brought a change of clothing...

after class, winter follows leonne to her apartment to hang out and waste time as she has to meet azzy and jian only at 6++pm. winter gets to watch TV (!!!) and enjoy a homebaked fruitcake and gets to meet a new fren, alex, who arrived close to 6pm at leonne's place. not long after, jian gives winter several miss-calls and winter hurries towards drill hall where she meets azzy and jian, as well as auzaini, james and melissa. and then the group proceeded slowly towards the quayside as ALL do not know the way to copthorne hotel BUT winter knows that it is near the metro tracks by the river tyne. *grins*

anyways, dinner begins with an extremely short prayer and a starter of a dish of err... fruits and lemon sorbet?! it was sweet and sour. red and white wine was served too. the next dish was spring chicken stuffed with goat's cheese with potatoes and the like. not too bad... not too bad... and for dessert, we were given apple crumble (?) and ice cream. coffee was served thereafter and followed by port, which winter decides to try. azzy said it tastes sweet and better than red/white wine and that once one tastes it, one will not put it down. err, sorry... winter still don't think it tastes nice. BUT, after a few sips of port... really tiny sips!!!, winter feels her face turning red... *eeeps*.

after a toast to the queen, several speeches were made and during the first speech, orla's phone went off but she wasn't at the table. so winter instantly grabs the phone and cancels the call but not before getting a dirty look. innocent!!! during the second speech, another phone went off... and this time, it was the phone of the first speaker!!! *lol* and it went off TWICE!!! after the speeches, the lights were dimmed and colorful lights came on... - girls night out -

date : 20 may 2005 (friday)
time : 2130 - 0300 (21may2005)
location : sutherland building, ikon, envy, jesmond
actors : eme, jen, lena, lyn, may, ren, winter

in between the hours of 1400 and 1700, all bvc students were struggling thru their final paper for the MCTs... civil litigation and civil evidence. after the paper was over, a group of msian bvc students plus one bruneian headed over to mcds for some refuelling. during which, plans were made for the night. in one corner were a group intending to have a girls night out... in another corner was another group planning to watch star wars... no prizes as to who won. [^.^]

scene 1 : 2130 - jesmond?
winter rushes outta her house to catch the metro to west jesmond to meet jen and to leave her overnight bag at jen's house. manages to get to the metro station just in time as the metro pulls in. hops on and grabs a seat. in between the stops of gateshead stadium and gateshead, winter's phone rings. jian calls to ask if she was arriving at west jesmond. in between the stops of monument and haymarket, winter's phone rings again. ren calls to postpone the time to meet at drill hall to 2245. passing thru haymarket, winter calls jian to inform that she'll be arriving soon. and upon arrival at west jesmond, winter calls jian again to find out on which side of the metro station should she wait. winter crosses the overhead bridge to the other side and begins her wait when her phone rings yet again. ren calls to ask if winter could tell jen about the postponement.

after the arrival of another two trains, winter was approached by a guy enquiring on how to get to osbourne road. lucky for him, jen's house was on osbourne road and so winter tells him that she doesn't know but her frens who are coming to pick her up will know. and so he and his fren waits with winter. after awhile, azzy, jen and jian shows up. winter mentions about the guy wanting to get to osbourne road and azzy directs them, after which, all got on board the metro towards haymarket. oh, and btw... whilst waiting for the metro to arrive, winter finally solves the puzzle that was bothering her all day... azzy shaved off his moustache!!! azzy looks younger!!! [>.<]

scene 2 : 2215 - sutherland building
arriving at haymarket, azzy, jen, jian and winter were really early and instead of waiting at drill hall where there's no place to sit and wait, they proceeded down towards sutherland building. and while waiting, a guy approached azzy and jian asking if they were law students and if he could get help from the student law office. he then continued to tell them his problems while jen and winter went off to take some pics... the guy finally left after some time...

after awhile, lyn and may arrives at sutherland and more pictures were taken...

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
clockwise from l-r : the church opposite sutherland building looks really creepy at night; the street towards northumberland road; and the other way towards camden court; winter, jian, jen, lyn, may, azzy posing!

finally after a rather long wait, eme and lena arrives with the news that ren was going to be late and will meet us at ikon and so all proceeded towards ikon. along the way, starving azzy and jian departs for subway with winter's topshop bag. both guys being manly and embarrassed to be seen carrying a girly bag!!! how they made it back home with the bag i do not know. i wished i had a piccy of them carrying the bag!!! [>.<]

scene 3 : 23++ - outside ikon
all decided to wait until ren arrives before heading in...

and they waited...

and waited...

waited... [=.='']

and finally ren arrives in a cab!

and the girls proceeded into ikon. entrance fees - £5, no student discount. [-.-'']

scene 4 : ikon
extremely loud trance music... loadsa people... random flickering bright lights... bouncy castle... and BUBBLES!!! (uh-huh... BOUNCY CASTLE AND BUBBLES)

eme gets into the mood... jiggying away to the music whilst lena, lyn and ren? or was it may? goes to deposit their coats at the coat room. when they return, all proceed hand in hand to the dance floor.. and the dancing begins!!!

(note : winter does NOT know how to dance... has two left feet!!!)

(note again : eme dances HOT!!! sizzle... ouch!!! HOTTT!!!)

lena and ren leave the dance floor to buy drinks... and while they were gone, the others started asking if they should leave ikon and head over next door to envy where it was r&b night. when lena and ren return, and after dancing a lil' more... all proceeded off the dance floor, outta ikon and into envy. entrance fees - £3.50 with NUS card.

scene 5 : 0017 - envy
r&b... and eme sashays away again!!! more dancing... and this time, the girls attract a couple of guys. a local tried dancing with the girls only to get no interest. the more he comes closer, the closer the circle the girls were dancing in gets. *lol* unfortunately, he doesn't get the hint and he continues to try thruout the night... (don't u guys ever get the hint??? especially when u come near, the girls just stop dancing and looks away???)

and they danced...

and danced...

and ignored the 'flies'...

and ignored...

and danced...

until their body and feet started to ache...

by then it was almost 0200 and the girls began their exit as they had booked two taxis for 0215? (hard to get a taxi on friday night unless u book in advance)

scene 6 : 02++ - ourside dobsons bar

the girls waited for blueline taxis and when they finally arrived, nearly had to fight the locals for the taxis. the locals were trying to get on despite being told that the name for the taxis was lena. eme, lena and ren got into a taxi whilst jen, lyn, may and winter got on the other and it was homeward bound after a tired night out!

and the following are some pics that were taken in ikon/envy...

Sunday, May 22, 2005

date : 06 may 2005 (friday)
time : 0830 - 1900
location : carlisle
actors : 27 lincoln's inn bvc students

[author's note : this kinda happened sometime ago... been busy preparing for my MCTs so i didn't have the time to pick the pics and edit and all... but now that MCTs are OVER, here it is!!!]

we had this lil' 'field trip' to carlisle... to visit the court there. it was a great experience... we got to meet some barristers and a few judges. sat in for a few cases... ooh! there was this one case that a couple of guys came in carrying MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS and they walked into the accused stand. and thruout the trial, we were kinda waiting to see if they would suddenly stand up and start playing!!! [^_^]
and my goodness... the amount of charges these guys had... and when the prosecutor was laying out the facts, i was thinking "and how many people were involved again?" it sounded as though there was a riot! what with climbing outta windows and hitting people with bottles... one moment here and the other moment there... [-.-"]

anywayz, apart from listening to several cases, we had lunch with the judges and barristers. lunch was typical finger food... err, mostly sandwiches. [=.=]
after lunch, we had to do some advocacy exercises in which we practised our bail applications in front of two judges. well, not all of us. and then, we had the treat of watching two barristers do the bail applications! and they did it ON THE SPOT! it was amazing... especially for the prosecutor... he got the brief, read thru it really quick and began his application there and then. *respect* [>.<]

after that, about 4pm, we all headed behind the courthouse to ku-ba. a public house which had fidel castro's potrait painted on the front of the building!!! and drinks were on lincoln's inn!!! *cheers* the judges and barristers came to join us too!!! [^_^]

-lapin-

what the...

i'm in a state of absolute bewilderment. i'm puzzled.

why?

i just went to throw my rubbish into our wheelie bin at the back of the house.
i know i know, the wheelie bin is supposed to be in the front, not at the back... but it is behind becos, if we leave it out front, it gets stolen! and we have lost TWO wheelie bins edii...

so, anywayz... i was at the back and instead of being greeted by the usual sight of an empty wooden deck and wheelie bin, i saw...

a bicycle,

several pots...

AND

a rabbit hutch.

seriously, there is a rabbit hutch at the back of my house. complete with two fat furry brown bunnies!!!

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

i've got bunnies at the back of my house here too!!! *grins*

[oh, and i just found out that the new additions to my backyard belongs to my landlord's sister-in-law's children...]

just nice... i was missing my bunnies back home... [>.<]
i miss bitbit, whom we found running on the road outside my house. bitbit, who, in the beginning, mana was worrying over whether he was carrying any diseases since his *ahem* balls are HUGE! bitbit, who captivated mana's heart as the most obedient bunny! seriously! he is!!! he only goes toilet at one spot, which is just by the drain, he doesn't dig up the soil, he doesn't nibble at mana's plants! oh gosh, i miss my horny bitbit... [^.^]

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
bitbit. he posed for this pic for me. seriously!

a few weeks after we adopted bitbit, at about midnight, mana was hanging the wet clothing up to dry at the back when she came rushing into the house calling for hana. mana was saying that there's a cat at the back, just behind the wooden fence we set up to keep bitbit away from the fence. we all ran out to scare the cat away... well, so-called cat... it was a cute, adorable... ruby!!! and so, a new addition to our family. bitbit went beserk! he had a companion!!!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
ruby.

add on a couple of months and lo and behold! first generation is born!!!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
beebee and ruru.

and then there were more.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
i dunno their names.

and more.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
eeee!!!

and finally...

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
pongpong!!! isn't he absolutely adorable!??

unfortunately for me, all these babies were born while i was here in newcastle. a few months before i got home for summer hols, mana gave them all away... including ruby. she kept only bitbit... not surprising since bitbit was her fav, the others were just too notti... poo-ing all over the place and all. ruby was evil... when she was pregnant, instead of pulling her own fur to line the nest, she would pounce on poor bitbit and pull his out instead!!! poor darling bitbit actually tolerated it all...

but, mana got yet another white bunny as a companion for bitbit. baby white white. the petshop owner said bww was a female... that was in july. come october and mana mentioned to me, "oh, btw... bww is a MALE!!!" OMG!!! poor bitbit. stuck with another GUY! and from the latest news, it seems bww has been bullying bitbit. my poor old darling! nvm... looks like if bww keeps it up, mana's gonna be sending him away too!!! *ehehe*

but for now... i have two brown bunnies to play with at the back of my house!!! wheeeheee!!!!! [>.<]

p/s : i just went to close my window and now, rain is hitting my window like nobody's business!!! omg... lucky me!!!

fearing the mountains in the distance.

lemme ask one question...

how many of u was NOT shocked when u found out i was doing law?

no, seriously. tell me...
how many of u?

hmm... i'm guessing NONE. i'm betting ALL of u either laughed till u fell off ur chair and/or thought "WHAT!?! YOU!?! AHAHAHAHA!!! DO NOT KID ME!!!".

i don't blame u... sometimes when i sit down and think about what next, i just shock myself... i mean, seriously... look back at my primary school report cards and u'll see for 6 years, my 3 ambitions, NOT ONE ever stated "PEGUAM" (that's lawyer in malay). NOT ONE. even throughout secondary school... NEVER once did i ever consider LAW as an option. emphasis on NEVER!

hello!? i was never the one for public speaking... much less standing up in class and making a presentation. back in std 5 when i was prefect, (yes, i was a prefect!) i did my ultimate best to avoid having to go to the front of the ENTIRE school and raise the flag during assembly. even if it meant that the whole school could only see my BACK. i avoided debates, public speaking... anything that meant that i had to be in front of an audience who would watch/listen to me only. i hate being in the spotlight. i still do...

fast forward to the time just after spm when it was decision time... continue to rebel and insist on pursuing my dreams (which would just mean having to marry a rich old man so that he would pay for my studies) or abandoning my dreams and choose between either accounting or law. needless to say i chose the latter of both choices... why didn't i pick accounting? i mean, i was really good at maths... seriously, i was
G O O D. but somewhere along f4/f5... i hated accounts. so, acca was out. and i chose law... i wonder what on earth i was thinking when i made that decision... oh.

but then again, i scraped thru a-levels, earned my llb(hons) degree... and here i am suffering but am still alive doing the bvc... why didn't i marry a rich old man?

i mean, if i'm not meant to be in this line... i would have failed and dropped out a long time ago right? i guess one can do anything if u really put ur mind to it... sure, there are times when i just want to lift the white flag and just give up. and believe me, of late, it is the one thing i really want to do... but then, i think about the challenges i've been thru, all the hardship and all the sweat and the tears... and i tell myself, "just a lil' bit more and it'll all be over... i need to prove that i am capable of doing this! i'm going to make the people who doubted me, regret for ever doubting me. i will. i'm going to make it and prove them wrong." and i shall... no, i will. and now i'm going back to studying for civil. i've just talked myself outta quitting again. [>.<]

so, seriously, i wanna know... how many of you seriously doubted that i would get this far?

u once said to go to u when i need u. i need u. where are u?

oh ...PLEAS...e... help meee...

"where a defendant is standing mute, a jury must be empanelled to determine whether the defendant is mute of malice or mute by visitation of god."

huh? just to decide whether the defendant is remaining silent or he is seriously disabled a jury needs to be empanelled?!?!?! *swt* what a complete waste of time and resources. why can't the judge decide on this himself?!! why must a jury be selected just to decide on such a simple matter? *swt*

and what's with the "mute by visitation of god"!?!?! can't they just use SIMPLE AND UNDERSTANDABLE ENGLISH?!?

"where a finding of mute by visitation of god is made, the jury must then determine whether the defendant is under a disability and cannot be tried."

eh? *swt* 'nuff said.

"where a jury determines that a defendant does have a disability, a fresh jury will determine whether the defendant did the act or omission alleged."

*swt* empanel yet ANOTHER jury!?!?! 'nuff said.

i'm cramming my head full of criminal procedure and criminal evidence for this MCQ i have on friday after which i have absolutely no use of. *sheesh*

What a Modern Woman Wants

Just a little something to share.

This story was written by a 15 year old Singaporean girl, Amanda Chong Wei-Zhen, who competed against 16-18 year olds and emerged the top in the annual Commonwealth Essay Competition, a writing contest that had 5,300 entries from 52 countries.

What a Modern Woman Wants

The old woman sat in the backseat of the magenta convertible as it careened down the highway, clutching tightly to the plastic bag on her lap, afraid it may be kidnapped by the wind. She was not used to such speed, with trembling hands she pulled the seatbelt tighter but was careful not to touch the patent leather seats with her callused fingers, her daughter had warned her not to dirty it, "Fingerprints show very clearly on white, Ma."

Her daughter, Bee Choo, was driving and talking on her sleek silver mobile phone using big words the old woman could barely understand.
'Finance' 'Liquidation' 'Assets' 'Investments'... Her voice was crisp and important and had an unfamiliar lilt to it. Her Bee Choo sounded like one of those foreign girls on television. She was speaking in an American accent.

The old lady clucked her tongue in disapproval.

"I absolutely cannot have this. We have to sell!" Her daughter exclaimed agitatedly as she stepped on the accelerator; her perfectly manicured fingernails gripping onto the steering wheel in irritation.

"I can't DEAL with this anymore!" she yelled as she clicked the phone shut and hurled it angrily toward the backseat. The mobile phone hit the old woman on the forehead and nestled soundlessly into her lap. She calmly picked it up and handed it to her daughter.

"Sorry, Ma," she said, losing the American pretence and switching to Mandarin. "I have a big client in America. There have been a lot of problems." The old lady nodded knowingly. Her daughter was big and important.

Bee Choo stared at her mother from the rear view window, wondering what she was thinking. Her mother's wrinkled countenance always carried the same cryptic look. The phone began to ring again, an artificially cheerful digital tune, which broke the awkward silence.

"Hello, Beatrice! Yes, this is Elaine."
Elaine.
The old woman cringed. 'I didn't name her Elaine.' She remembered her daughter telling her, how an English name was very important for 'networking', Chinese ones being easily forgotten. "Oh no, I can't see you for lunch today. I have to take the ancient relic to the temple for her weird daily prayer ritual."

Ancient Relic. The old woman understood perfectly it was referring to her.

Her daughter always assumed that her mother's silence meant she did not comprehend.

"Yes, I know! My car seats will be reeking of joss sticks!"

The old woman pursed her lips tightly, her hands gripping her plastic bag in defence.

The car curved smoothly into the temple courtyard. It looked almost garish next to the dull sheen of the ageing temple's roof. The old woman got out of the back seat, and made her unhurried way to the main hall. Her daughter stepped out of the car in her business suit and stilettos and reapplied her lipstick as she made her brisk way to her mother's side.

"Ma, I'll wait outside. I have an important phone call to make," she said, not bothering to hide her disgust at the pungent fumes of incense.

The old lady hobbled into the temple hall and lit a joss stick, she knelt down solemnly and whispered her now familiar daily prayer to the Gods.

"Thank you God of the Sky, you have given my daughter luck all these years. Everything I prayed for, you have given her. She has everything a young woman in this world could possibly want. She has a big house with a swimming pool, a maid to help her, as she is too clumsy to sew or cook. Her love life has been blessed; she is engaged to a rich and handsome angmoh man. Her company is now the top financial firm and even men listen to what she says. She lives the perfect life. You have given her everything except happiness."

"I ask that the gods be merciful to her even if she has lost her roots while reaping the harvest of success. What you see is not true, she is a filial daughter to me. She gives me a room in her big house and provides well for me. She is rude to me only because I affect her happiness. A young woman does not want to be hindered by her old mother. It is my fault."

The old lady prayed so hard that tears welled up in her eyes. Finally, with her head bowed in reverence she planted the half-burnt joss stick into an urn of smouldering ashes. She bowed once more.

The old woman had been praying for her daughter for thirty-two years. When her stomach was round like a melon, she came to the temple and prayed that it was a son. Then the time was ripe and the baby slipped out of her womb, bawling and adorable with fat thighs and pink cheeks, but unmistakably, a girl. Her husband had kicked and punched her for producing a useless baby who could not work or carry the family name.

Still, the woman returned to the temple with her new-born girl tied to her waist in a sarong and prayed that her daughter would grow up and have everything she ever wanted. Her husband left her and she prayed that her daughter would never have to depend on a man. She prayed every day that her daughter would be a great woman, the woman that she, meek and uneducated, could never become.

A woman with 'nengkan'; the ability to do anything she set her mind to. A woman who commanded respect in the hearts of men. When she opened her mouth to speak, precious pearls would fall out and men would listen. She will not be like me, the woman prayed as she watched her daughter grow up and drift away from her, speaking a language she scarcely understood.

She watched her daughter transform from a quiet girl, to one who openly defied her, calling her 'laotu'; old-fashioned. She wanted her mother to be 'modern', a word so new there was no Chinese word for it. Now her daughter was too clever for her and the old woman wondered why she had prayed like that. The gods had been faithful to her persistent prayer, but the wealth and success that poured forth so richly had buried the girl's roots and now she stood, faceless, with no identity, bound to the soil of her ancestors by only a string of origami banknotes.

Her daughter had forgotten her mother's values. Her wants were so ephemeral; that of a modern woman. Power, Wealth, access to the best fashion boutiques, and yet her daughter had not found true happiness.

The old woman knew that you could find happiness with much less. When her daughter left the earth everything she had would count for nothing. People would look to her legacy and say that she was a great woman, but she would be forgotten once the wind blows over, like the ashes of burnt paper convertibles and mansions.

The old woman wished she could go back and erase all her big hopes and prayers for her daughter; now she had only one want: That her daughter be happy. She looked out of the temple gate. She saw her daughter speaking on the phone, her brow furrowed with anger and worry. Being at the top is not good, the woman thought, there is only one way to go from there - down.

The old woman carefully unfolded the plastic bag and spread out a packet of beehoon in front of the altar. Her daughter often mocked her for worshipping porcelain Gods. How could she pray to them so faithfully and expect pieces of ceramic to fly to her aid? But her daughter had her own gods too, idols of wealth, success and power that she was enslaved to and worshipped every day of her life. Every day was a quest for the idols, and the idols she worshipped counted for nothing in eternity. All the wants her daughter had would slowly suck the life out of her and leave her, an empty soulless shell at the altar.

The old lady watched her joss stick. The dull heat had left a teetering grey stem that was on the danger of collapsing.

Modern woman nowadays, the old lady sighed in resignation, as she bowed to the east one final time to end her ritual. Modern woman nowadays want so much that they lose their souls and wonder why they cannot find it.

Her joss stick disintegrated into a soft grey powder.

She met her daughter outside the temple, the same look of worry and frustration was etched on her daughter's face. An empty expression, as if she was ploughing through the soil of her wants looking for the one thing that would sow the seeds of happiness.

They climbed into the convertible in silence and her daughter drove along the highway, this time not as fast as she had done before.

"Ma," Bee Choo finally said. "I don't know how to put this. Mark and I have been talking about it and we plan to move out of the big house. The property market is good now, and we managed to get a buyer willing to pay seven million for it. We decided we'd prefer a cosier penthouse apartment instead. We found a perfect one in Orchard Road. Once we move in to our apartment we plan to get rid of the maid, so we can have more space to ourselves ..."

The old woman nodded knowingly.

Bee Choo swallowed hard.

"We'd get someone to come in to do the housework and we can eat out - but once the maid is gone, there won't be anyone to look after you. You will be awfully lonely at home and, besides that, the apartment is rather small. There won't be space. We thought about it for a long time, and we decided the best thing for you is if you moved to a Home. There's one near Hougang - it's a Christian home, a very nice one."

The old woman did not raise an eyebrow.

"I've been there, the matron is willing to take you in. It's beautiful with gardens and lots of old people to keep you company! I hardly have time for you, you'd be happier there."

"You'd be happier there, really." Her daughter repeated as if to affirm herself. This time the old woman had no plastic bag of food offerings to cling tightly to; she bit her lip and fastened her seat belt, as if it would protect her from a daughter who did not want her anymore. She sunk deep into the leather seat, letting her shoulders sag, and her fingers trace the white seat.

"Ma?" her daughter asked, searching the rear view window for her mother. "Is everything okay?"

What had to be done, had to be done.
"Yes," she said firmly, louder than she intended, "if it will make you happy," she added more quietly.

"It's for you, Ma! You'll be happier there. You can move there tomorrow, I already got the maid to pack your things." Elaine said triumphantly, mentally ticking yet another item off her agenda. "I knew everything would be fine."

Elaine smiled widely; she felt liberated. Perhaps getting rid of her mother would make her happier. She had thought about it. It seemed the only hindrance in her pursuit of happiness. She was happy now. She had everything a modern woman ever wanted; Money, Status, Career, Love, Power and now, Freedom, without her mother and her old-fashioned ways to weigh her down ...

Yes, she was free. Her phone buzzed urgently, she picked it up and read the message, still beaming from ear to ear. 'Stocks 10% increase!'

Yes, things were definitely beginning to look up for her...

And while searching for the meaning of life in the luminance of her hand phone screen, the old woman in the backseat became invisible, and she did not see the tears.

date : 01 may 2005
time : 1300 - 1900
temperature : 5 - 19 degrees celcius
weather : sunny
location : leazes park
actors : azzy, jen, jian, omi, ren, winter

scene 1 : msn chat

winter : yeah? u there?
winter : i replied ur msg, u didnt reply.
jian : huh? i didnt get any replies at all.
jian : dayyaamnn. ur MSN is really killin me.
jian : nvm. now the rain sorta stopped.
winter : its ur msn larr.
winter : well... it did rain here awhile ago. so how?
jian : lemme get dressed. we go in a while's time.
winter : ok.

[note : the above conversation is an altered version of the original]

scene 2 : @ haymarket metro station
winter meets jian who is sorta freaking out becos a moment ago, he suffered a temporary memory loss when attempting to withdraw money from the atm and they walked slowly towards leazes park, with jian talking about brain damage...
[-.-"]
meanwhile, azzy and jen were still at home calling their parents. omi and ren were doing i-dunno-what at their home.

scene 3 : @ leazes park
this was the scene that greeted winter and jian when they arrived...

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
the sky was so misty and dull.

but determined not to let the weather dampen their adventurous spirits, they ventured further into the park and were greeted by this...

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
clockwise : healing area, colourful teepees, some stall, small stage, kids' fun area, another small stage.

... the park had been transformed into a carnival with a hippie-ish, rock concert, kinda feel!

after several minutes at the park, the wind lifted, the clouds parted, the mist drifted and the almighty sun came out in all his warming glory! *joy* it was so warm that winter, who had on 3 layers, had to remove the first outer layer whilst jian took off his red, hooded jacket. the people who were there at the park were also doing the same. in fact, looking around at the time, one will see almost EVERYONE "stripping"!!! [>.<]

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
random shots of the crowd.
yeaps, that's st. james park in the background.

there were various kinds of people there... ranging from the gypsy-ish to the weird-looking, funny-dressed people; from lil' babies in prams to the elderly. not only that, there were a LOT of dogs roaming around with their masters... in fact, there was this ONE dog which both winter and jian kept meeting...

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

further to that, the amount of people carrying either a glass of beer or a can of beer were amazing! add to that the amount of people smoking... not only cigarettes but also weed. [-.-"]
yeapz... there was that smelly grassy smokey smell~!!!

anyways, the beer started to tempt jian and he decided to begin his search for the stall that was selling the beer. whilst searching, they saw this stall...

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
top - bottom : get on a coloured lady, spun round and round and upside down too, and voila! a white young girl!!!

...ehehehe! winter dared jian to go play but unfortunately, jian refused... (probbly AFRAID he might turn into a chun chiq... *lol*). the ride costs £2 to play and it seems safe. the ride owner (the topless guy) would stop spinning u the moment ur hair comes free... in case ur hair gets stuck somewhere and ... u imagine what happens urself! [0.o]

both winter and jian venture away from the ride, still in search of the elusive beer stall, when they saw this...

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
clockwise : "i wish my camera would work", the wish tree, tying a wish on the wish tree, jian's wish, winter's wish, writing a wish.

... btw, the temperature had risen so much that by this time, winter had already removed her cardigan!!! PURRRFECT WEATHER!!!

resuming the search for the still elusive beer stall, they saw loads of weird and interesting stuff... breathed in lotsa second hand smoke... (weed) and heard various kinds of music... and still, true to the nature of stubborn men, jian refused to ask people where they had bought their beer from! by this time, winter and jian had explored so much of leazes park than they ever did before! eventually they came upon the general area of the main stage where 'rock' was playing and LOTSA people were sunbathing and the scenery was lovely!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

and jian FINALLY found his beer... which costs £2.50 a pint and £2 a can. winter, in the adventurous mood, decided to get a pint too...

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
"it tastes like shandy!!!"

... but didn't finish even half a pint!!! [^.^]

somewhere about this time, omi and ren FINALLY decided to come and they called winter to tell her that they would be there in about an hour's time... [-.-"]

scene 4 : @ the lake
... having finished exploring the whole of the festival, jian and winter went to the lake to pass the time and enjoy the beer and the sun!

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
swans!!!

they did a lil' sunbathing...

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
[>.<]

... for almost an hour before azzy and jen arrived! and so did omi and ren! [-.-"]

ooh! and while they were there, they saw an empty baby pram roll into the lake, pushed by the slight breeze, and the father falling into the lake in his attempt to retrieve it.

scene 5 : still in leazes park
finally meeting azzy and jen at the gazebo... and also omi and ren, jian and winter began their i-forgot-how-many-round of the festival with them... [^.^]

and while azzy and jian went to buy beer and visit the wc... the girls decided to queue for ICE CREAM!!! when they bumped into...

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
ren, bad bear, jen

...bad bear! who was soo drunk that he could hardly stay in a spot! in addition... he's really HAMSAP! [.."]

thereafter... it was piccy-taking time... and by 7pm, they all went their separate ways... with omi and ren going home, while azzy, jen, jian and winter going for dinner.
